A very rare Akragantine litra from Eryx
Lot 1116
SICILY. Eryx. Circa 480-472 BC. Litra (Silver, 11 mm, 0.64 g, 1 h). ERYKI-OИ Eagle standing left with closed wings. Rev. Crab. HGC 12, 296. SNG ANS 1340. Very rare. An exceptional and beautifully toned example struck on a very broad flan. Thin flan crack, otherwise, extremely fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

The appearance of an eagle and a crab on this litra suggests some sort of Akragantine dominance over Eryx. The issue may date to the later years of Theron of Akragas (circa 488-473/2 BC), whose son Thrasydaios ruled in Himera in 483/2-472 BC.
